Camped in the Kaokoveld
An Augustinus camp in the Kaokoveld, Namibia
'I knew it would make a great painting'

'When my wife and I were wandering about Namibia, in the 1990s, one of the places we made a huge effort to visit was the Kaokoveld in Namibia. We had our own vehicle, lots of camping equipment and so we made sure we spent a lot of time camped in the riverbeds that cut through the Namib desert from the hinterland plateau headed for the Atlantic Ocean. The most interesting of these river valleys were the Hoanib and the Hoarsuib. The latter had a very spectacular gorge half way down it's course. The moment I saw this place I knew it would make a great painting and as soon as I got back to my studio in Durban I created several designs for a painting. I waited until 2019 before actually doing the painting. That's the thing about wilderness in Africa! It is timeless. '
