'Lilac breasted rollers are brilliant and beautiful birds whose plumage shimmers with interference colours that are a real challenge to paint. But it's all about painting what you see and not what you think, and that gets me to the end of a painting. This painting is based on material I gathered on an occasion in 1999 when I noticed that a pair of rollers had made a nest in a hole in a tree above my tent at North Gate in Moremi. What was useful was that eventually they ignored me completely.'
