'San ta Wani is a part of the Chitabe floodplain complex of streams and rivers that are found to the south of Moremi in Botswana. I camped there often because of it's proximity to Maun where I used Crocodile Camp as my base. San ta Wani was fun because you could camp wherever you liked back then. But the real reason I spent time there was because for a few years this area was the prime place in Botswana to see totally over the top male lions when it came to their manes. I saw male lions here that had shaggy manes which improbably extended behind their shoulders and along the sides of their stomachs. I had never seen manes such as these before. Because I was wary of depicting animals with oversized horns or tusks lest they appear unrealistic - I never did paint my San ta Wani lions with those oversized manes.'
