'Moremi in the Okavango has very varied scenery. The track that runs from the South gate directly through the middle of the national park to Xakanaxa traverses what is known as the Mophane Tongue. This is a large tract of mopane forest between the Kwahi and Chitabe floodplains. The tree is very common in certain parts of Botswana. Mopane can be very monotonous to look at or drive through at mid day but in the evening light it can look quite beautiful. Every time I used this route to get to the Kwahi North gate quickly - at some stage along the way the road ahead would be inconveniently blocked by elephants and time would be lost waiting for them to move on. This painting is of one of those evening encounters.'
