'My experiences of camping holidays in the Zambezi Valley at Mana Pools when I was at school in Zimbabwe had a powerful influence on the direction of my life. I knew immediately that I wanted to do something that kept me in these kinds of places. I chose to get a BSc in Geology in the mistaken belief that this would take me to wilderness areas. How wrong I was! And my career as a geologist lasted one year before I headed for Botswana as an artist in 1979. But Mana pools and the wilderness experiences I had here as a schoolboy ultimately defined the decisions I would make. Mucheni was my favorite camping site. This painting of lions hunting along the Zambezi River is of a place very close to Mucheni. Boy - was this place HOT! And by hot I mean hot temperature-wise. Midday temperatures went up to 40C! The evenings were magical because of the relative coolness of the air as the sun dipped below the top of the escarpment.'
