'The Hoanib River in the Kaokoveld is wilderness personified. When my wife and I were there in the 1990s it was a very difficult place to access if you were on your own - as we were. If our vehicle had broken down we would have been in big trouble with a long walk through rugged desert to the nearest village which was more than a hundred kilometers distant. In the bed of the Hoanib river the sandy track follows the dry course of the river along a route that had been formed during the previous rainy season. So every year the route is slightly different. We spent several weeks camping up and down the entire length of the river and were rewarded with memorable wildlife encounters with desert elephants. This was hard camping as we had to carry all the water and fuel we needed. This painting is of several desert elephants crossing that track on one of the many occasions that we encountered them. '
