'This work is of an area I visited for a client who wanted a wildlife painting of his own vast game ranch in the Karoo. I was familiar with the kind of scenery he was thinking of because I had spent one full year in an area of the Karoo to the north at a place called Sutherland. This was when I was working as a geologist after I had graduated from University. The visit to this client's ranch, which was in the Eastern part of the Karoo reminded me how wild some parts of South Africa are. Especially the parts of the Karoo near the Great Escarpment and the Cape Mountains - where vast flat-topped sandstone mountain ridges were the dominant features of the terrain. As a geologist I had walked these mountains with a geiger counter, but had only seen eland, kudu and steinbok. The client's ranch, however, also had mountain zebra. It took quite an effort to approach these animals!'
