'This painting was done for a client who had seen examples of my work while on safari in Africa. My agent arranged for me to travel to Spain and visit the vast estate owned by the client. For days I walked the hills in search of wildlife. I saw a lot and was very impressed by the vast size of this private wilderness. I intended to paint a male deer with good antlers. However approaching one of these individuals in the very thick bush that covered the sides of hills and in the canyons was not what I expected. This bush was surprisingly difficult to walk through and I was making a lot of noise. On the last couple of days I succeeded and I had my material. This was my first ever painting of European wildlife.'
