'After I obtained a BSc Degree in geology at Durban University in South Africa I worked as a geologist for one year at Sutherland in the Karoo. I wasn't very motivated as a geologist but it did get we out into the wilderness of Africa - sort of! The Karoo has vast wide open spaces and high mountain ranges but it was bitterly cold there some months and coming from East Africa I had severe culture shock when I first arrived in the Karoo as an exploration geologist. It snowed the first week I was there. When I wasn't on a dirt bike wandered along the sandstone horizons of the flat topped mountains that dominate here, hoping my Geiger counter would start squealing. Mostly it didn't but I did get to see some really striking scenery such as this place which was nestled in a valley between two high ridges.'
