'In Botswana mopane scrub and the trees they eventually grow into are very common in certain areas such as on the track between Savuti and the Chobe River in the North. This route was virtually never used in the 1980s because a shorter and better road had been made via Kachikau. Yet it was along this unused track that I have had some of my best sightings of really wild lions which had very little exposure to tourists. This painting is of a pair of lions I surprised lying up right next to the track in mopane country along the Ngwezumba River. They roused themselves and 30 seconds later they were gone!'
