'This painting is more than just imagery to me. For me it symbolize all the back breaking effort that it took to actually gather some material for a painting. The trip we had organized never happened as we planned it. Our Benjele porters became quite rebellious and the guides we had been provided with had their own agendas for the trip which eventually became a small bush meat hunting expedition which we had unknowingly financed. Of course the Benjele were hunter gatherers and we got to see them at ease in their domain but it wasn't what we had planned on doing. The irony was we got a much more interesting and genuine experience of the rainforest and it's inhabitants. This was no theme park. We lost weight, weakened and sickened but our Benjele guides still managed to get their guests (Clarissa and I) close to elephants, gorillas and forest buffalo. Ndoki was the wildest and harshest place I have ever been in my life in Africa. Clarissa came back with Loaisis, a horrifying parasite disease (worms wiggling about in her eyeballs.) When we got back we swore we would never venture into the African rain forest again. We returned for another trip two years later having forgotten all that we had been through at Ndoki.
