'I saw leopard only once in India. This painting is of that occasion which was near some ruins near the center of Bandhavgarh National Park in India. It was just a glimpse as the leopard stalked some unseen prey in the jungle. I was struck how different the leopard looked when compared to an African leopard. The body was much more wiry and the head smaller. We had been perusing tigers and the chance encounter with this leopard was an unexpected bonus prize for that morning's efforts. Of course this was all courtesy of our skilled elephant mahout. This man was a genius. He controlled our huge elephant with his feet, stick and commands while scanning the surrounding jungle for the quarry his passengers so wanted to see. And at the same time chose routes that the elephant could manage without falling over or loosing a passenger over the side. Yes, the mahout was the real hero who made this painting possible!'
