Karoo geologist
Paul Augustinus on a mountain overlooking the plains below in the Karoo in South Africa
'The Karoo might have had a hand in my gamble'

' I know the Karoo because I was went there in the year following my graduation from University with a degree in geology. I worked for one year as a geologist in 1987 and after that decided that I would prefer to be self employed. And that's what I have been since then. Never had a boss. Never had an employee. I have worked for my self my entire life! Boy, was that a huge gamble that in retrospect seems like a kind of madness. Which it might have been as it took me 10 hard, hand to mouth years before I had my first show. The Karoo might have had a hand in my gamble as I would spend all my working hours wandering along sandstone ridges with a Geiger counter. I was not really interested in the work. I was more interested in the spectacular scenery I was walking through and the fleeting glimpses of wildlife that I occasionally had. I would do watercolour sketches in my room back at Sutherland. This painting used some of those sketches done 30 years ago of the escarpment scenery south of Sutherland.'
