'When my mother followed my father (who had left her for another woman) to Kenya we ended up living in Mombasa where he had started a small engineering company called Martin & Paul Kenya Ltd. (More of that story can be found HERE.) Living in 1960s Kenya was fun because on school holidays we would go on weekend safaris to the Kitani Bandas in Tsavo West National Park or to Amboseli Bandas in the Amboseli National Reserve. Kilimanjaro loomed up over the horizon from both those locations, but from very different angles. At Amboseli we would headed out every morning in our rented Morris Minor car and wander about looking for rhino or big tusked elephants. One morning we came across a magnificent lion on the flats near Lake Amboseli. It was only the second time I had ever seen a lion in the wild, and so is a crystal clear memory for me.
In 2003 my wife and I traveled to Amboseli and we and saw a lion in almost the exactly same place as the one mentioned above. This brought back a flood of memories for me. Not much had changed in the intervening years although the glaciers on Kilimanjaro are smaller now than they were back then and the rhinos are all long gone. It was a nostalgic moment for me and the outcome of that field trip was this painting!'
