'In the last twenty years I have flown back and forth between East and Southern Africa many times. On all of those journeys I made sure that I was in the left hand side of the plane when flying North. Going South I wanted to be next to a window on the right hand side. The reason being that on this route you cross over many iconic protected areas and famous geographical features so you have to be on correct side of the aircraft to see them properly. For me these flights are journey back in time because looking down I can see so many places that have figured in my past.
Sights to be seen flying North in a left hand seat are the Chimanimani Mountains, Ruaha River and National Park, Lake Manyara, the Crater Highlands and Ngorongoro, Tarangire and the Ngurumans - all iconic wildlife areas where there are few signs of human activity (such as glints of sunlight from corrugated roofs or angular farm boundaries.)
On the way South in a left hand seat you get to see Kilimanjaro, Meru and Ngurodoto Crater, Tarangire, Lengwe, Kota Kota, Mount Gorongosa, and Zinhave.
Every one of these areas have figured in my past in one way or another. This painting is inspired by my many flights over Africa along this route.'
