'Trying to cross paths with the wildebeest migration is a bit like hoping one is going to see Kilimanjaro at Amboseli. Neither are guaranteed. One of the enduring frustrations of anyone who has traveled to the Mara Triangle during the migration is to actually see the migration. The wildebeest can be in one area in their tens of thousands one day. The following day they might have mysteriously vanished off somewhere else. It's all about spending time there. Since 2003 my wife and I have enjoyed a 3 or 4 week annual camping safari to the Triangle. And over the years we have been fortunate in seeing some truly incredible gatherings of wildebeest. Where we camped, if we heard the wildebeest at night we could expect that the next day might bring us a lucky surprise. But more often than not all we would find were the winding paths the wildebeest had combed into the grass as they passed by. This painting of a lion crossing those combed paths is my homage to the Mara Triangle and it's ability to confound as well as delight.'
