'Everything involved in the art of painting is a personal ongoing journey, through time, encompassing the accumulation of new technical experiences and abilities. New tricks of the trade are discovered, dexterous skills extended and confidence increased. But wilderness painting is also another kind of journey - a physical journey through different landscapes in different parts of the world. The challenge is to portray wilderness, wherever you find it, always with a fresh vision, yet bringing to bear those accumulated artistic abilities. For me, a Danish-born, African-based, artist, coming to Scotland was a discovery, that there was such a beautiful place in the British Isles as the Cairngorm Mountains. And it was pure luck that when I was there the weather was so fine. Walking high into the moorland above Tomintoul village, I was fortunate not only to see red deer, but also some of the mountains’ epic moody landscapes, with the sun out and impressive cloudscapes. I made sketches and took photographs of those moods, all the time planning how I would use my technical experience, gained on large African wilderness paintings, to portray the sheer scale, depth and mood of these mountains. Truly an artistic journey in more ways than one and that's how this painting came about!'
