Paul Augustinus and Baka guide
Paul Augustinus and a local guide in the rainforests of the Congo
'An elephant encounter here is always a surprise'

'This was my first painting of a forest elephant. My wife Clarissa and I spent several weeks at Ndoki, a remote rainforest region of Congo Brazzaville. We had several encounters with forest elephants all of which were enormously exciting because an elephant encounter here is a surprise and at close quarters. The Baka forest people who we were using as porters and guides for this trip were quite wary of elephants and had a tendency to vanish instantly leaving Clarissa and I wondering what move we should make. To see Ndoki Foot Safar 1996 a documentary of that journey and also how the painting was completed in my Durban studio in 1996 - click HERE.'
