'When I lived at Serondella on the Chobe River in Botswana in the early 1980s I would have to drive in to Kasane to buy supplies. To get there fast I would use the main road on the sandridge above the Kolwezi floodplains. The view down on to the Chobe from this road was quite superb but one never game viewed along along this track because it was the main route to Ngoma and therefore heavily corrugated because of truck traffic. On one of these supply-run occasions I surprised two lions in the process of chasing several sable across the track. I just got a glimpse of what was happening and by the time I stopped the action had moved downslope and out of sight. But the image of that scene was burned in my brain and this painting is the result. '
