'In Africa there is no other place like Ngorongoro and I have been fortunate enough to have been visiting this place since 1953 (as a baby) when my parents lived in Dar es Salaam. My early visits are a blur now but I have many vivid memories of this place that go back decades. I know that down in the crater you see lots of wildlife such as cheetah, rhino and lion. But for me it's more interesting to be wandering around on the crater rim where wildlife is transient but the views are spectacular (and the temperatures can be bitterly cold.) Why? Well because down in the crater one is on a vast plain surrounded by what seem to be some some nondescript hills - you could be anywhere in East Africa. But on the rim you are looking down on the Crater floor from a height. The backdrop is quite obviously a spectacular caldera of gigantic proportions. Those are the views that interest me most at Ngorongoro.'
