'This painting of mine is of a scene I have seen played out many times along the Mara River in the Triangle in Kenya, East Africa. IBut had one exceptional opportunity to observe such a crossing far away from the crowds of tourists at the usual crossing points. Along with my wife Clarissa I watched a crossing take place a few metres away from where we were camped. We were treated to an hours-long crossing which we had all to ourselves with wildebeest thundering past our tents. From that occasion has come virtually all the material that I have used for my crossing paintings.'
