'I found something much more interesting'

'This history of this painting goes all the way back to 1978 and is based on an encounter I had with a very skittish herd of kudu near Sutherland in the Karoo when I was walking sandstone outcrop horizons with a Geiger counter. I was looking for signs of Uranium Oxide, the yellowish powder from which uranium can be refined. This mineral occurred in specific layers of sand and siltstone in Karoo sediments. Instead of this I found something much more interesting - interesting encounters with the wildlife and wilderness that occurred in the mountainous parts of the Karoo!'

.

A Paul Augustinus wildlife painting of two kudu antelope males with spiral horns, standing on the edge of the Great Escarpment in the Karoo. There are blue mountains in the distance.
