'I traveled to the Ndoki area of the Congo rainforest specifically because I wanted to get material for bongo paintings. The bongo is a very secretive antelope. Very beautiful and almost mythical because of the effort needed to locate one of these fantastic animals. We walked for weeks in pristine rainforest wilderness and never saw one. Then one day my luck changed when I was walking down to a stream near where we had camped with our Benjele pygmy companions. Using the stream as way of walking far from the camp without any possibility of getting lost in the trackless rainforest I felt quite safe not having one of the Benjele with me. About two kilometres distant from our encampment I bumped into an unsuspecting bongo quite by accident. Standing motionless next to a big tree I watched it wander about in the dense undergrowth for ten minutes. Then it realized something was not quite right and froze. I could almost see the thoughts racing through its brain! Then it melted away into the gloom of the rainforest.'
