'This is a painting of a lion encounter I experienced in 1979 in the Ngwezumba Valley in Chobe National Park in Botswana. In 1972 the track from Savuti to Kasane through this valley was abandoned in favor of a more direct route through Kachikau. From that moment on the Ngwezumba road fell into disuse and the wildlife in this valley became very unfamiliar with vehicles or people. For a few years this place gave a select few clued-up people an opportunity to experience harsh, untrammeled wilderness without any rules or regulations. The lions along Ngwezumba and the Kwikampa pans were delightfully aggressive when you came across them - as this painting depicts. What magnificent lions these were! This particular lion charged us without hesitating every time we came across it, always skidding to a halt jut a metres or two away and then angrily walking slowly away with it's tail flicking back and forth like a demented snake. The unabashed hostility in it's eyes was something to behold.
By 1982 Ngwezumba had been rediscovered and the free days were gone forever.'
