'This is a very early Botswana painting of mine. The scene it depicts is of the small string of pans that lie next to the track from Maun to Savuti in the Chobe National Park. The pans are small ones but they hold water right into the early dry season so they have remarkable numbers of wildlife using them in the months of June and July if the previous rainy season had been a good one. I camped here several times on the way to Savuti from my base at Croc Camp. In 1979 I was determined to get the full wilderness experience when I camped and I would sleep on a camp bed out in the open next to my vehicle. One bright moonlit night I woke up and was startled to see several hyena a few meters away from me. I can still remember their glinting eyes studying me. I stopped sleeping out in the open after that as I decided that there was nothing more ridiculous than voluntarily lying unconscious in full view of who knows what passing by!'
