'In Africa the last rays of sunshine in the evening or the first rays in the morning are the moments when wildlife and scenery look beautiful and illuminated theatrically with great atmospherics. I believe that this light guarantees a masterpiece will result if used in a painting. This golden moment lasts only a fleeting few minutes so getting up before dawn and arriving back at camp after dark are necessary. Which brings me to the bitter truth of the matter - as an artist you have to spend months in the bush to ensure being in just the right place at just the right moment! So how many months of driving, hardship and effort in the Ngwezumba Valley, Botswana did I need for my Evening Rays lion painting to make it on to the canvas? Plenty!
