'Damaraland in Namibia has a certain mystique about it. In the 1960s and 1970s this whole region was beyond the Red Line, and thus out of bounds to travelers. So when that restriction was abolished in the late 1970s the whole of the Kaokoveld from the Uniab to the Kunene Rivers was opened up. A vast wilderness populated by exotic wildlife such as desert elephant, black rhino and coastal lions was there to be enjoyed by any one who had a four wheel drive vehicle and some camping equipment. And in the late 1980s, which was when I was there, there was no restriction on where you could go, or where you could camp. Indeed, during my first year there I never came across any other vehicles or camps. It was a true wilderness, one that had consequence if you broke down because of the lack of surface water in any obvious places. You had to carry all the water and fuel you would need with you wherever you went. Wildlife was not as prolific as in the Okavango or Chobe but you still saw a lot.
