'This painting was inspired by my time with these very colorful but jewel-like birds in the Okavango region of Botswana in Southern Africa in the 1990s.
As I have said many times before - I find it amazing that when it comes to getting really substantive material for a painting, I find that most of my material comes from a very few occasions when I happened to be in the right place at the right time in the early morning or late afternoon. This painting is a perfect example on an opportunity that never repeated itself again even though I returned several times afterwards to the a small landing area where a village moored several of it's dugout canoes (mekoros) hoping for more. But it never happened again!'
