An elephant herd whips up dust as a vehicle aproaches too closely in Chobe National Park, Botswana
'You can always tell if the elephant is aware of you'

'This painting personifies my own understanding of what it is like to encounter elephants when one is driving along a backcountry track somewhere in the Okavango. You see elephants up ahead and by the time you get there they are already tangentially moving off through the bush. You can always tell an elephant's demeanor by noting the position of the head. If the elephant is disturbed it's head will be cocked upwards and slightly sideways so it can watch you with one eye. In this painting the closest elephant is very alert and aware of what's going on directly behind it - namely the approach of a vehicle along the track it has just crossed. The painting depicts scenery as you would find it along the Southern boundary track of the Moremi National Park in the Chitabe area of the Okavango in Botswana'
