It is one of an ongoing series of paintings depicting lions on the Skeleton Coast.
The mouth of the Kunene is a very interesting place. A fresh water river cuts through the vast Namibian Desert to reach the Atlantic on the Skeleton Coast. This is a very arid region of Namibia and yet it has a rich array of wildlife inhabiting it. Coastal lions patrol this region leaving their tracks on sand dunes. There are also desert elephants that slide down dunes into the Hoanib Valley. And in some parts there are black rhino as well. You come here well prepared because to break down in this environment would mean walking hundreds of kilometers to the nearest help.
I did not see lions while at the Uniab with warden Rob Braby. But in the few days I had there I saw their tracks in several places along the river. I don't need to see wildlife but I do need to know that it's there and I found these tracks to be just as satisfying as seeing the actual lions. These lions are very mysterious and have inflamed my imagination. '
