'One of the delights of bird watching along marshy reed banks in the Okavango is that one occasionally encounters sitatunga antelope. These aquatic antelope are very shy and seeing one close up is a special moment. This painting is of one such occasion. I was so intent on a group of bee eaters fluttering about near a riverbank nesting site that I was completely unaware that I was being studied by a very suspicious sitatunga in a reed bed just meters away from where I stood waist deep in a crystal clear stream. These bee eaters had a very small nesting site close to the public camping site at Xakanaxa Lagoon. For a few years it was possible to wade along a tiny flowing channel to where they were nesting - something I now realize to have been a very risky thing to do. This painting is of that place. I returned to the bee eater colony many times over the month we were there but I never saw the sitatunga again.'
