Clarissa, Lechwe Haven
The campsite of Paul and Clarissa Augustinus in the Okavango, Botswana
'I could have lived here for a year'

'A painting should be a reflection of the artist's experiences. Every one of my paintings is something I have experienced at a particular place. This painting is of an area called Lechwe Haven in the Okavango, Botswana where Clarissa and I wandered about for a few days on one of our dugout safaris. One of our overnight camping sites was a truly idyllic flood with small islands of date palms dotted about it. I could have lived here forever but the few days we actually spent there will have to do. On the last day we saw these two cheetah crossing between islands. This was in 1992 and seeing cheetah was rare then even though the Okavango was wilder and had more wildlife than now.'
