'Elephant encounters in the Hoanib, Namibia are sometimes difficult. You have to have extreme patience when you come across elephants so they are not disturbed in any way. The valley is very narrow in places and sometimes there is no way to get past without disturbing them. You then park under a tree and wait for them to move off at their own pace. Sometimes this takes hours. Down on the floor of the valley where there is no cooling breeze temperatures can soar at mid day. This painting is of an occasion when we were not delayed elephants dozing on or near the track - the elephants moved away quickly. But five minutes later we bumped into the rest of the herd and then we sat sweltering for two hours before they finally roused themselves and melted silently away into the surrounding rocks and bush. We moved on intent on making camp as far down the valley as we could get before sunset.'
