Rhino, Kaokoveld
A glimpsed sighting of a black rhino in the Kaokoveld, Namibia
'Eventually it crested a ridge several kilometers away'

'In the 1980s, camping in the Kaokoveld, Namibia was hard work. Clarissa and I made several safaris there. The duration of these visits was determined ultimately by how much water we could carry and how frugally we used it. We managed for 10 days on one occasion! So, considering the scarcity of the game in the Kaokoveld, one prayed that every sighting would be a good one. Rhinos were particularly hard to find and it took us several visits before we had figured out how to locate them. Most of the sightings we had were of the rear end of a spooked rhino disappearing into the far distance. I watched one of these disappearing rhinos through the binoculars and was amazed to see it still retreating at a trot 15 minutes later. Eventually it crested a ridge a few kilometers away and was gone! However we did have one spectacular encounter completely by accident when we were following a group of desert elephants and this painting is of that occasion. This painting appears in my book Desert Adventure and for more information about that book click HERE'
