'When Clarissa and I traveled to the Congo for the first time in 1996 we literally blew our life savings on this journey so that I could get material for paintings of the African rainforest at Ndoki. It was a huge gamble and we had a fantastic adventure in the Ndoki forest. It was a huge gamble that provided us with the adventure of a lifetime but was the toughest trip I have ever been on. Our Benjele guides, being forest people, were hunting bush meat for their village and both Clarissa and I were ill for some of the time. But in spite of the problems we saw a lot but finding Bongo proved difficult. It was only in the last week that I saw one magnificent individual about two kilometers for our forest camp even though we had been walking 8 hours a day for weeks looking for them. They had be close by all the time and almost within earshot of our noisy Benjele camp.'
