' I flew to this island with Lloyd Wilmot'

'I am intrigued by the juxtaposition of past with present. In the Makgadikgadi Pans in central Botswana there is an island with some ancient ruins and lots of wildlife in the vicinity. In 1985 I flew to this island with Lloyd Wilmot and camped there for some few days. This was a very remote location in that era and Lloyd landed on the salt flats right next to the granite island. This island also has an incredible array of warped and stunted baobabs which along with some ancient ruins. These give the island a very mysterious atmosphere. Following this and other journeys I made to this region and this island I was inspired to produce a series of paintings combining the ruins with the wildlife that occurred there. This painting is the first one of that series.
More about that journey with Lloyd can be found in my book Botswana, A Brush with the Wild. To information about that book which was published in 1988 click HERE.'
