' I consider the many weeks that I spent camped on the lower of the Ngwezumba Pools between 1978 and 1983 as to have been some of the best wilderness experiences that I have ever experienced in Southern Africa. In 1978 the track south from the Ngoma/Kasane road and up the Ngwezumba River from Savuti had been abandoned and unused for several years after the new Shorobe - Magwikwe - Kachikau road was built. This new road was better, and orientated to the Western side of the Mababe Depression in the the Chobe National Park.
At that moment the Ngwezumba Pans area dropped off the radar for a decade. It was a great place to go if you wanted to camp wild in some of the best game country in Africa and never see another vehicle. In all of those years, myself and several other individuals had that part of the vast Chobe National Park all to ourselves. I totally took advantage of this situation while it lasted. The lower pools at the Ngwezumba Dam were an incandescent hot spot for spectacular sightings of every kind of animal you could imagine - including very aggressive lions and a very few black rhino. This painting is from 1987 is of the lowest of the perennial Ngwezumba pools.'
