' This strange island (Kubu) in the vast salt flats of Sua Pan in central Botswana is a place well worth making the effort to see. It is difficult to get to this locality, especially in the rainy season when the salt flats are not suitable for vehicles. I flew down here with Lloyd Wilmot in his tiny single engined aircraft. He landed on the salt next to the island and we camped here for several days. The interesting thing about this island is that it has some very ancient ruins on it. This is a mystery because there is no water here and nowhere to grow crops. The island is generously populated with some of the most gnarled and twisted baobabs I have ever seen and it's these trees which give the island it's atmospheric aspect.
