Camped in Damaraland
Camped in the wilds of Damaraland in Namibia
'They were the first I had ever seen'

'Damaraland in Namibia in the late 1980s was an interesting place to be adventurous. If you were willing to take a few risks then you could have a vast piece of wild Africa all to your self. And it was populated by black rhino, lion and elephant to boot. So it was the full wilderness package. Clarissa and I spent several weeks in the Barab River valley in Damaraland. We did all of these trips with our trusty Toyota Hi Lux 4 x4 vehicle and alone! Meaning we did not do it with the safety of another companion vehicle. If we had broken down we would have had very long and hazardous walks to the nearest help. That was the risk we took. We carried all the water and fuel we would need and navigated our own way about through the river valleys and desert plains. We saw rhino, elephant, lion and gemsbok. On one occasion we saw some mountain zebra on a ridge above where we were camped. That was a very special sighting for me because they were the first I had ever seen.'
