'The wide open plains of grass and salt in the Makgadikgadi Pans are of central Botswana are daunting places to spend a few days on safari. It's hot and shade is scarce. There are lots of irritating midges. Palm trees do not give much shade and the ground under them is filled with a tangled litter of razor sharp fronds. Palm tree shade sucks! But when the sun sets it's different. Cool breezes and soft evening light makes everything look beautiful. And the nights are spectacular on a plain because one really can see how big the cosmos is.
I spent several days out here on these plains in 1969 and I came away with an understanding of what distance meant. This painting is of the plains just south of the Nata Maun road.'
